Manafort asks judge to throw out mortgage fraud case

Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman for President Trump, has formally asked a judge to toss the New York mortgage fraud case against him. So reports the Associated Press.

Manafort’s lawyers argued in a court filing the case would constitute double jeopardy, violating a state law against prosecuting someone more than once for the same allegations.

A federal court convicted Manafort last year of defrauding banks and the U.S. government by dodging millions of dollars in federal taxes. After Manafort was sentenced in March, New York prosecutors announced state-level charges for mortgage fraud and falsifying business records.
